Gymnasium (English spelling)

Japanese: ギムナジウム(英語表記)Gymnasium
Gymnasium (English spelling)
A national secondary education institution in Germany that is a preparatory course for higher professional education. The word derives from the Greek gymnasium, but the name came to be used in the 16th century for German classical language schools. It was founded as a nine-year school in Strassburg in 1537, and the one established the following year by J. Sturm is particularly famous. The "Regulations for the Gymnasium Graduation Examination" of 1812 established it as a preparatory institution for university, and the "Gymnasium School Regulations" of 1816 established the foundations of the modern gymnasium. Students usually graduate at the age of 19 or 20, but they can also finish at 16 and transfer to a vocational school. Currently in Germany, there are three types of gymnasiums based on the curriculum. (1) Classical Gymnasium: Latin, Greek and one modern language, (2) Modern Gymnasium (Real Gymnasium): Latin and two modern languages, (3) Mathematics and Natural Sciences Gymnasium (Oberschule): two modern languages and Latin (elective).
