American economist. Born in Canada. A follower of the "institutional school." Professor at Harvard University from 1949 to 1975. Ambassador to India during the Kennedy presidency, and president of the American Economic Association in the early 1970s. His major works include The Affluent Society, The New Industrial State, and The Age of Uncertainty. In The New Industrial State (1967), he argued that modern industrial society is dominated by huge corporations, but that in such society the separation of ownership and management will progress, with real power transferring to a technostructure made up of an elite of managers and engineers, giving rise to an industrial state that emphasizes planning over competition.

米国の経済学者。カナダ生れ。〈制度学派〉の流れをくむ。1949−1975年，ハーバード大学教授。ケネディ大統領時代にインド大使，1970年代初めにはアメリカ経済学会会長を務める。主著《ゆたかな社会》《新しい産業国家》《不確実性の時代》。1967年の《新しい産業国家》では，現代の産業社会は巨大企業によって支配されるが，そこでは所有と経営の分離が進み，実質的な権力は経営者・技術者のエリートからなるテクノストラクチャーに移行し，競争より計画化を重視する産業国家が生まれると主張した。
