(1) The first American paddle steamer to successfully cross the North Atlantic. A sailing ship launched in August 1818 at the Crocker & Fickett Shipyard in New York. It was 33.5 meters long, 7.86 meters wide, 320 tons, and equipped with an auxiliary engine of 90 indicated horsepower. The paddle wheels had an outer width of 11 meters and could be folded up like a fan and stored on the deck. It departed its home port of Savannah on May 24, 1819, and crossed the Atlantic in 29 days and 11 hours, arriving in Liverpool. The total engine time during that time was 85 hours, with the rest being under sail, but since most early steamships were equipped with auxiliary sails, it is recognized as the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. (2) America's first nuclear-powered merchant ship. Named in commemoration of the first Savannah. Construction began at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in 1957, and it was completed in March 1962. It is a passenger and cargo ship with a full load displacement of 21,850 tons, 12,220 gross tons, 10,000 tons of cargo capacity, a maximum capacity of 184 people, an overall length of 181.5 meters, and a width of 23.8 meters. The reactor was a Babcock & Wilcox pressurized water type with a thermal output of 69,000 kilowatts, a maximum output of 22,000 horsepower, a maximum speed of 21 knots, and a speed of 7 knots with auxiliary engines, and it could sail for three years and four months without a refueling change. However, it is currently decommissioned due to problems such as excessive operating costs. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991, and the hull is repaired and stored.
