1861‐1938 Uruguayan painter. Born in Montevideo, he studied oil painting from an early age, qualified as a lawyer at the age of 24, and served in a succession of important government positions while also working to educate artists and organize exhibitions. After turning 60, he devoted himself to painting, and lived in Paris for eight years. His main subjects were mulattos, members of the lower social classes, and he depicted their poor but cheerful lives in a naive style using impressionist techniques.
