German Old Testament scholar. In 1913, he was appointed leader of the German Evangelical Society in Jerusalem. From 1921 to 1923, he led the German Evangelical Community in Jerusalem. He was professor of Old Testament at the universities of Gleibbard, Basel, Halle, and Leibniz. He had a keen understanding of the historical background of Israel and was also interested in its political and administrative history. He wrote many books, including Israel and Egypt (1909). His scientific approach to history is still applied to the study of ancient Israel's history today. He was also involved in the revision (37) of Kittel's Biblia Hebraica.
