1090‐1153 French Christian thinker and saint. His Latin name was Bernardus. He was called "Doctor mellifluus" ("Doctor of the Sweet Flu") because of his charming personality and beautiful writing style. He was born into an aristocratic family in Fontaine near Dijon, and entered a Cistercian monastery around 1112 with 30 relatives and siblings. Three years later, he became the abbot of the newly established abbey of Clairvaux, the location of which he had personally chosen. From then on, the Cistercian Order developed rapidly, and his fame and influence spread. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
