French Christian thinker and saint. His Latin name was Bernardus. He was called "Doctor mellifluus" ("Doctor of the Sweet Flu") because of his charming personality and beautiful writing style. He was born into an aristocratic family in Fontaine near Dijon, and entered a Cistercian monastery around 1112 with 30 relatives and siblings. Three years later, he became the abbot of the newly established abbey of Clairvaux, the location of which he had personally chosen. From then on, the Cistercian Order developed rapidly, and his fame and influence spread.

フランスのキリスト教思想家，聖人。ラテン名ベルナルドゥスBernardus。その人柄の魅力，文体の美しさゆえに〈甘蜜博士Doctor mellifluus〉と称される。ディジョンに近いフォンテーヌの貴族の家に生まれ，1112年ころ近親･兄弟ら30人とともにシトー会修道院に入る。3年後みずから場所の選定をした新設のクレルボーClairvauxの修道院長となる。以後シトー会は急速に発展し，彼の名声や影響力も広まる。
