A legume plant (illustration) that is mainly cultivated in the tropics, especially in dry regions. The young legumes are used as vegetables, and the ripe seeds are used to extract oil, crushed for soups, or eaten as a powder. It is a shrub that grows to a height of 1-3 m, with branches covered in short grey hairs. The leaves have three leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate, 5-10 cm long and 1-3.5 cm wide, hairy on both sides, and have yellow glandular dots on the underside. The flowers are butterfly-shaped and grow in axillary racemes 3-7 cm long. The calyx has short hairs and glandular dots, and is lobed into five at the apex.
