Pigeon pea
A legume plant (illustration) that is mainly cultivated in the tropics, especially in dry regions. The young legumes are used as vegetables, and the ripe seeds are used to extract oil, crushed for soups, or eaten as a powder. It is a shrub that grows to a height of 1-3 m, with branches covered in short grey hairs. The leaves have three leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate, 5-10 cm long and 1-3.5 cm wide, hairy on both sides, and have yellow glandular dots on the underside. The flowers are butterfly-shaped and grow in axillary racemes 3-7 cm long. The calyx has short hairs and glandular dots, and is lobed into five at the apex.

熱帯の,特に乾燥地で主に栽培されるマメ科植(イラスト)。若い豆果を野菜にし,熟した種子から油を採ったり,それを砕いてスープに用いたり,粉にして食べる。高さ1~3mの低木で,枝は灰色の短い毛でおおわれる。葉は3小葉。小葉は披針形で長さ5~10cm,幅1~3.5cm,両面に毛があり,裏面には黄色の小腺点もある。花は蝶形花で,長さ3~7cmの腋生(えきせい)の総状花序につく。萼には短毛と腺点とがあり,先は5個に裂ける。
