A city in northern Portugal. Industry is thriving. It is the birthplace of the first Portuguese king, Afonso I (Afonso Henriques), and is known as the "birthplace of the nation." The old town is home to many medieval historical buildings, including Guimarães Castle, the Bragança Dukes' Palace, and the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, and in 2001 the "Historic Centre of Guimarães" was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage).
