Also known as Virchow. German pathologist and politician. Graduated from the Berlin Military Medical School. After graduating from the University of Würzburg, he became a professor at the University of Berlin. He advocated cytopathology, which investigates diseases at the cellular level. He also emphasized that cells arise only from cells, and contributed to the development of cell theory. His books include Cellular Pathology. As a member of the Centre Party in the Reichstag, he attacked Bismarck in the Kulturkampf, and later founded the Progress Party, where he served as its leader (1880-1893). He was also active as an anthropologist.

ウィルヒョウとも。ドイツの病理学者，政治家。ベルリン軍医学校卒。ビュルツブルク大学等を経てベルリン大学教授。病気を細胞段階で追求する細胞病理学を提唱。さらに細胞は細胞からのみ生ずることを強調し，細胞説の発展にも寄与した。著書に《細胞病理学》。また中央党の国会議員として文化闘争でビスマルクを攻撃，のち進歩党を創立，党首（1880年―1893年）。さらに人類学者としても活躍した。
