A butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. In Japan, it is endemic to Honshu, and habitats have been discovered in Iwate, Fukushima, Saitama, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, Gifu, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Mie, Hyogo, Tottori, Okayama, Shimane, and Hiroshima, but the habitats are generally limited to small areas. Among them, the habitat in Tottori City has been designated a national natural monument, and the habitat in Midori Ward, Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, has been designated a prefectural natural monument. In foreign countries, it is only known to be found on the Korean Peninsula. Wing span is about 30 to 37 millimeters. The upper surface of the wings is blackish brown, and males have areas that shine strongly purple. The underside of both sexes is yellow, with blackish brown bands and spots arranged in a tiger pattern, creating a very distinctive pattern. It appears once a year, from June to July in warm regions and from July to August in cold regions. It is an ecologically unique butterfly, and its larvae live in or near the nests of the stag beetle ant, which builds nests in trees, and grow up by being fed by the ants via mouth-to-mouth transfer.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目シジミチョウ科に属するチョウ。日本では本州の特産種で、現在まで、岩手、福島、埼玉、神奈川、山梨、長野、岐阜、滋賀、京都、大阪、三重、兵庫、鳥取、岡山、島根、広島の諸府県に産地が発見されているが、その発生地は一般に狭い場所に限られる。そのうち、鳥取市の生息地は国の天然記念物に、神奈川県相模原(さがみはら)市緑(みどり)区の生息地のチョウは同県の天然記念物に指定されている。外国では朝鮮半島に産することが知られているだけである。はねの開張30～37ミリメートル程度。はねの表面は黒褐色、雄では強く紫色に光る部分がある。雌雄とも裏面の地色は黄色で、黒褐色の帯状紋と斑点(はんてん)が虎斑(とらふ)状に並び、きわめて特徴のある模様をつくる。年1回の発生で、暖地では6～7月、寒冷地では7～8月に出現する。生態的に特異なチョウで、幼虫は樹上に造巣するハリブトシリアゲアリの巣またはその近辺にすみ、アリから口移しに餌(えさ)を与えられて育つ。
