Shugiwasho - Shugiwasho

Japanese:
Shugiwasho - Shugiwasho

16 volumes. Written by Kumazawa Banzan, a Confucian scholar of the early Edo period. The first edition was published in 1672 (Kanbun 12), and a second edition with extensive revisions was published a few years later. This book, a dialogue-style work of over 350 articles (2nd edition), is one of Banzan's masterpieces along with the later Shugi Gaisho. While Gaisho is mainly about "matters of governing the world," Washo discusses "techniques for the daily use of scholars." This book gives us an insight into Banzan's scholarship and thought, including his Confucian eclectic position based on the Zhu-Wang school of thought, his unique theory of "human feelings that change with the times" based on his sharp insight into nature, history, and humanity, and his political and social thought that contains criticism of the current situation. The extent of his influence can be seen from the fact that an abridged copy of the work, "Shugiwa Shoryaku," exists at Suyama Totsuan in Tsushima.
