...The structure of the carriage is made up of various parts such as the house, the saddle, the spokes, the wheels, the shafts, the yoke, the axles, the wheels, and the handles. In rainy weather, the carriage is covered with a rain skin made of raw silk dyed light yellow and oiled, but this was only permitted for those of the third rank or higher. The highest rank among ox carriages is the Karabisashi carriage, used by the retired emperor, empress, crown prince, empress dowager, princes, regents, and chancellors on sunny days, followed by the Amamayu carriage, the Birouge carriage, the Hajitomi carriage, the Ajirobisashi carriage, and the Ajiro carriage. The eight-leaf carriage, with its box decorated with the eight-leaf pattern, was widely used by everyone from ministers to those of the fourth or fifth rank, while the itogewonokuruma, with its box decorated with colored threads, was often used by women.
