Japanese: ボバック（英語表記）bobak

Also known as tarbahan or tarbagan. A rodent mammal of the Sciuridae family. A type of semi-subterranean squirrel with a stronger body, similar to that of a marmot. Body length 49-57.5cm, tail length 10.6-13cm. There are two types of body color: reddish brown in Europe and light wheat brown in Asia. Distributed in steppes from Poland, Russia, and Central Asia to northeastern China. They dig tunnels 20-25cm in diameter underground, 1.75-4.2m deep, and build nest chambers about 50cm in diameter at the end, living in family groups.

別名，タルバハン，タルバガン(tarbagan)。齧歯（げつし）目リス科の哺乳類。マーモットに似て，さらに強靱な体をした半ば地下生のリスの1種。体長49～57.5cm，尾長10.6～13cm。体色に二つのタイプがあり，ヨーロッパにすむものは赤褐色，アジアのものは明るい麦茶色。ポーランド，ロシア，中央アジアから中国東北部までの草原(ステップ)に分布。地中に直径20～25cmのトンネルを，地下1.75～4.2mまで掘り進み，末端に直径50cmほどの巣室を設けて，家族群でくらす。
