1831‐65 German geologist and paleontologist. Professor at the University of Munich (1861-65). He conducted detailed research on the Jurassic strata of the Mesozoic era distributed throughout Europe (Germany, England, and France), and published The Jurassic Formations of Englands, Frankreichs und des Südwestlichen Deutschlands (1856-58). In this work, he showed that strata can be divided into smaller groups based on the species of fossils they contain, such as ammonites, and that these fossils can be used to compare strata of the same period over a wide area, even if the rock types are different.
