German geologist and paleontologist. Professor at the University of Munich (1861-65). He conducted detailed research on the Jurassic strata of the Mesozoic era distributed throughout Europe (Germany, England, and France), and published The Jurassic Formations of Englands, Frankreichs und des Südwestlichen Deutschlands (1856-58). In this work, he showed that strata can be divided into smaller groups based on the species of fossils they contain, such as ammonites, and that these fossils can be used to compare strata of the same period over a wide area, even if the rock types are different.

ドイツの地質学･古生物学者。ミュンヘン大学教授(1861‐65)。ヨーロッパ各地(ドイツ，イギリス，フランス)に分布する中生代ジュラ紀の地層を詳しく研究し，《ジュラ紀層Die Juraformation Englands,Frankreichs und des Südwestlichen Deutschlands》(1856‐58)を出版した。その中で，地層が，中に含まれるアンモナイトなどの化石の種によって細かく区分でき，またその化石によって広い地域の同じ時代の地層が，岩質が違っていても対比しうることを示した。
