For an image to be uniformly sharp over a wide angle of view, as in a photographic lens, it is not enough to simply eliminate spherical aberration and coma aberration; astigmatism and curvature of field must also be sufficiently eliminated. A rotationally symmetric optical system in which spherical aberration and coma aberration have been eliminated is called an aplanat, while an aplanat that has no chromatic aberration and in which both astigmatism and curvature of field have been sufficiently eliminated is called an anastigmat. The etymological meaning is that astigmatism has been eliminated. This type of lens has been produced since the 1880s with the development of the so-called barium crown glass, which has a high refractive index and low dispersion.

写真レンズのように広い画角にわたって像が一様に鮮鋭であるためには，球面収差とコマ収差が除去されただけでは不十分で，さらに非点収差と像面湾曲が十分に除かれている必要がある。球面収差とコマ収差が除かれた回転対称の光学系はアプラナートと呼ばれるが，色収差がなく，非点収差と像面湾曲の両収差の除去も十分に行われたアプラナートをアナスティグマートという。語源的には非点収差が除去されているの意である。この種のレンズは高屈折･低分散のいわゆるバリウムクラウンガラスの開発により，1880年代以降に作られるようになった。
