A perennial plant of the lily family. A type of leek, it is slightly shorter than ordinary leeks, vigorously tillers, and has thin, dark green, upright leaves. It produces small leeks (bulbulbs) at the end of the flower stalk, which also produce small leeks, so it is also called sangai leeks (three-tiered leeks). These small leeks are separated and planted, rooted, and propagated as seedlings. It is completely dormant in winter. It has been recorded in China since ancient times, and in Japan it was mentioned in documents from the mid-18th century. In some snowy areas of the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions, it is grown in small areas for personal use as summer leaf onions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
