Japanese: リョウメンシダ - りょうめんしだ

An evergreen perennial fern of the Dryopteris family that grows on the forest floor in mountainous regions throughout Japan and often forms large colonies. It is also found in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The finely cut leaf lobes are arranged neatly on the underside of the leaves, making the underside look more impressive, hence the name "double-faced fern." The rhizome is short and horizontal, and often reproduces by producing runner-like adventitious buds. The leaves are large, elliptical to ovate-elliptical, acutely pointed, and reach lengths of 80-150 cm. The scales are thin and sparse except on the lower part of the petiole. The sporangia are attached from the lower to upper parts of the leaf blade, apical to the veins, and the intumescence is reniform and entire.

日本各地の山地の林床に生じ，大群落をつくることが多いオシダ科の常緑多年生シダ植物。朝鮮半島南部にも分布する。細かく切れこんだ葉の裂片が葉裏に整然と並ぶため，裏面のほうがかえって立派に見えるので両面シダの名がある。根茎は短く，横向きで，しばしば走枝状の不定芽を出して繁殖する。葉は大型で，楕円形から卵状楕円形，鋭尖頭，長さ80～150cmに達する。鱗片は細く，葉柄下部以外ではまばらである。胞子囊群は葉身の下部から上方にかけてつき，葉脈に頂生し，包膜は円腎形で全縁。
