In 1770, E. Waring conjectured that, for every positive integer n ^, n = x1k + x2k + ^... + _xsk ( _xi ≥ 0), where k ( k ≥ 2) is an integer, there exists s ₌ ^s ( k ) such that n = _x1k ₊ _x2k + ... + xsk (xi ≥ 0) has integer solutions x1 , x2 , ..., _xs . This is called Waring's problem. In 1909, D. Hilbert proved that such s = s ( k ) does in fact exist.
