Joachim Bouvet

Japanese: ブーベ - ぶーべ(英語表記)Joachim Bouvet
Joachim Bouvet

A Jesuit born in France. His Chinese name was Bai Jin. He entered Beijing in 1688 as one of the missionaries sent by Louis XIV, and thereafter engaged in missionary work and served at the imperial court, lecturing on Euclidean geometry and anatomy to the Qing Emperor Kangxi. He left China for France in 1694, and arrived in Guangzhou on a French ship in 1698 with many other Jesuits. He was in charge of surveying the Mongolian region and the Great Wall area when creating the "Complete Guide to the Imperial Palace." During his stay in France he published "The Biography of Emperor Kangxi," a masterpiece that is indispensable to research on the history of the Qing dynasty.
