A long narrative poem written in Chu Nom by Nguyen Dinh Chieu (1822-88), a blind patriotic poet of the mid-Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam, based on his experiences from the first half of his life. It was published in Cholon in 1865. It tells the story of Luc Van Tien, a candidate for the civil service examination who was unable to take the exam after his mother's death and who became blind because he cried day and night for his dead mother, but who endured persecution and became a state master, and of Kieu Nguyet Nga, who was once saved by Tien and remained faithful to him, and who married him. The poem is written in 2,080 lines in traditional 68-style poetry. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
