A city in the province of Drenthe in the northeast of the Netherlands. Situated on a moraine hill, it was the base for the development of the surrounding peatlands in the 19th century. After 1920, as peat mining declined, unemployment increased, but after World War II, industries such as various synthetic fibers, metal processing, chemicals, and lumber were established, and it developed rapidly, becoming the largest city in Drenthe. In addition to a zoo and a museum, there are prehistoric ruins made of rounded gravel carried by glaciers in the vicinity, and there are oil and natural gas fields near the border with Germany to the south. Population: 93,107 (1992 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
