Originally meaning a nobleman, in various parts of the Islamic world it is generally used to mean teacher, master, mentor, eunuch, great merchant, etc. In Turkish it is hoca. As a historical term, in the 9th and 10th century Samanid court, the wazirs were called great Khojas, and in Central Asia from the 12th century onwards, a sect of Islamic mystics who would later become known as the Naqshbandi sect was called the Khoja sect. This Khoja sect began to advance into East Turkistan from the 14th century onwards, and in the 17th and 18th centuries, they established the so-called Kashgar Khoja dynasty, based in Kashgar and Yarkand.
