Split - Split (English spelling)

A city in the southwest of the Republic of Croatia. It is located at the tip of a small peninsula on the central coast of Dalmatia, facing the Adriatic Sea. Italian name: Spalato. Population: 188,694 (2001). Most of the inhabitants are Croats and Serbs. It has the second largest port in Croatia after Rijeka (Italian name: Fiume) near the Italian border in the north, and is connected to the hinterland by rail, road and air, making it the center of Adriatic tourism. Cement is mainly exported from the port. Other industries include shipbuilding, plastics, textiles and machinery, forming an industrial zone including the suburbs. There are also many educational and cultural facilities, such as the Marine Research Institute, Split University, Archaeological Museum and Ivan Meštrović Art Museum.

Founded as a Roman colony before Christ, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built a palace at the end of the 3rd century, of which parts still remain, along with a mausoleum and city walls. The town was destroyed by the Goths, the Huns, and the Abbasid Caliphate of Turkey. It was ruled by Venice from 1420 to 1797, and later came under French rule for a time, before coming under Austrian control until 1918. It became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1918, but was owned by Italy during World War II. After the war it became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but in 1991 it became part of independent Croatia.

クロアチア共和国南西部の都市。ダルマチア地方中部海岸の小半島先端部に位置し、アドリア海に臨む。イタリア語名スパラトSpalato。人口18万8694（2001）。住民の大部分はクロアチア人とセルビア人。北方のイタリア国境に近いリエカ（イタリア名フィウメ）に次ぐクロアチア第二の港をもち、後背地と鉄道、道路、空路で結ばれ、アドリア海観光の中心地ともなっている。おもにセメントを港から輸出する。ほかに造船、プラスチック、織物、機械などの工業があり、近郊を含む工業地帯を形成している。海洋研究所、スプリト大学、考古学博物館、イワン・メシュトロビッチ美術館など、教育・文化施設も多い。

　紀元前にローマの植民地として建設され、3世紀末にローマ皇帝ディオクレティアヌスが宮殿を築き、廟(びょう)や城壁とともにその一部が現存する。ゴート人、フン人、トルコのアッバース朝によって町は破壊された。1420～1797年にベネチアの支配を受け、またその後、一時フランスの支配を含むが1918年までオーストリアの支配下に置かれた。1918年よりユーゴスラビア王国領となるが、第二次世界大戦中はイタリアが領有した。戦後はユーゴスラビア社会主義連邦共和国に属したが、91年独立したクロアチア領となった。
