The name of an old British gold coin minted from 1663 to 1813. It is approximately 25 mm in diameter, weighs approximately 8.5 g, and has a fineness of 916.6/1000. In Britain, which had been plagued by the outflow of currency due to fluctuations in the international gold-silver ratio, the prevalence of counterfeit currency due to clipping of the edges of coins, and a decline in the value of currency, this gold coin was issued by Charles II as a preventive measure against these problems. Its current value was initially equivalent to a 20 shilling silver coin, but temporarily rose to 30 shillings, and was fixed at 21 shillings in 1717.
