Kārle (English spelling)

This Buddhist cave is located about 55km northwest of Pune (Poona) in western India. Its shrine (chaitya) cave is believed to have been built in the early 2nd century based on inscriptions. It is just under 14m wide and 38m deep, making it the largest of the early Buddhist shrine caves and the most refined and complete in form. It is also extremely well preserved. The six pairs of male and female donor figures on the rear wall of the main corridor are magnificent masterpieces that evoke the energy of the body. However, the Buddha statues were added in the late Gupta period. The figures on elephants and horses on the capitals of the internal colonnades are also magnificent, and the stupa placed at the back has a simple beauty with a sense of stability.

西インド，プネー(プーナ)の北西約55kmにある仏教石窟。その祠堂(チャイティヤ)窟は，刻文から2世紀初期の造営と考えられ，幅14m弱，奥行38m弱あり，前期仏教石窟の祠堂窟のうち最大の規模を誇るとともに，最も洗練され完成された形態をとる。保存もきわめて良い。正面廊後壁の6組の男女供養者像は，肉体のエネルギーを内に秘めた堂々たる傑作である。ただし仏像はグプタ時代後期の補作。内部の列柱柱頭の騎象･騎馬の人物像もすばらしく，奥に安置した仏塔(ストゥーパ)も安定感のある簡素な美しさをもつ。
