Also known as Hamaomoto. A perennial plant of the Amaryllidaceae family. It grows on the sandy beaches of southern Kanto and Okinawa. The bulbs are cylindrical and 30-50cm long, with thick, long leaves that grow in clusters and do not die even in winter. In August and September, a flower stalk 50-80cm tall emerges from between the leaves, and a dozen fragrant white flowers bloom on two bracts. There are six tepals, each about 8cm long, with six stamens and a tubular base. The fruit is spherical. The seeds are large and have spongy seed coats that float on seawater and spread.
