Neapolis (Italian) (English spelling)

[history]
In ancient times, the city was called Parthenope because the body of Parthenope, a siren who threw herself into the sea, washed up on the shore and her tomb was built here. The name Naples comes from the fact that the Greeks built a colony here and named it Neapolis (meaning "new city"). It came under the control of Rome in the 4th century BC, then the Byzantine Empire, which defeated the Ostrogoths in the 6th century, ruled it, and became an independent principality in the 8th century.
