Heidelberg man

Heidelberg man

A fossil human found in Europe. In 1907, a stonecutter excavated a complete mandible from the small village of Mauer near Heidelberg, Germany. It was immediately handed over to Schettenzack, a professor of geology at the University of Heidelberg, through the landowner. Based on the accompanying mammal fossils, it was deemed to be from the middle Pleistocene (Pleistocene) and the Mindel Interglacial Period, but no cultural remains were found. It was very large and sturdy, and had primitive characteristics such as no protruding chin or chin as seen in modern humans, a wide mandibular ramus, and a shallow mandibular notch, but its teeth were not very different from those of Neanderthals. For many years, it was considered to be of unknown origin because no comparable material was found, but today many similar specimens have been discovered and it is considered to be the early man of Europe. It is also called Mauer's mandible.
