〘Noun〙 (kina) A general term for the genus Cinchona in the Rubiaceae family. About 400 species are known in the mountainous regions of Bolivia and Peru, and several of these were once widely cultivated in Java, Sumatra, India, Colombia, Africa, and other places for the production of quinine. The trunk reaches a height of over 25 meters and has red bark. The leaves are stalked, broadly elliptical, about 5 to 15 centimeters long, and grow opposite each other, with dense soft hairs on the underside. The flowers are white or reddish purple, and many of them gather at the ends of the branches to form a cone. The bark is called "Cinchona bark" and contains alkaloids. It has been used by the Incas since ancient times as a medicine for fevers, and as quinine, it is used as an antipyretic, analgesic, and tonic, and is particularly effective against malaria. It is written as "kina" or "kina". Cinchona tree.
