Tsuruga Shinnai

Japanese: 鶴賀新内 - つるがしんない

It is an art form of the Tsuruga school of Shinnai-style plays, and there is a theory that it began with the second generation, commonly known as Wakatosi Shinnai. There have been several generations up to the present day, but the first three generations are well known.

First World

(1714-74) His real name was Okada Goro-jiro. He was a retainer of Yukata and a disciple of the first Wakasa no Jo. His first name was Shinnai. In 1758 (8th year of the Horeki era), he changed his name to Kaga Hattayu. The name "Shinnai-bushi" did not exist in his time.

II

(?-1810) A blind man and the younger brother of Tsurugasai, a disciple of the first Wakasanojo. His original name was Kaga Toshi. After going through the Wakasano name, he became the second Shinnai. His unique style of nasal voice dropping became extremely well-known, and from around 1777 (An'ei 6) the style of joruri such as Tsuruga, Fujimatsu, and Toyoshima came to be collectively called Shinnai-bushi.

III

Dates of birth and death unknown. A blind student of the second Kaga. It is believed that he took the name of the third Kaga from the second Kagatoshi around 1814 (Bunsei 11). During the Bunsei era (1818-1830), he performed as a jikata in the dance of plays and worked to pioneer new styles. He later changed his name several times, to Toyonakasonotayu, Tsuruga Izumojo, and Tsuruga Bunya, but his whereabouts after 1827 (Bunsei 10) are unknown.

初世

（1714―74）本名岡田五郎次郎。湯方御家人(ごけにん)で、初世若狭掾(わかさのじょう)の弟子。初名新内。1758年（宝暦8）加賀八太夫と改名。この人の時代にはまだ「新内節」の名称はない。

2世

（？―1810）初世若狭掾の高弟鶴賀斎の弟で盲人。初名加賀歳(かがとし)。若歳を経て2世新内となる。鼻へ声を抜く独得の節落しが世上でもっぱらの評判となり、1777年（安永6）ごろから鶴賀、富士松、豊島などの系統の浄瑠璃(じょうるり)を総括して新内節と呼称するようになった。

3世

生没年未詳。2世の門人で盲人。2世加賀歳から1814年（文化11）ごろ3世を襲名したと思われる。文政(ぶんせい)年間（1818～30）にかけて芝居の舞踊の地方(じかた)として出演し、新生面の開拓に努めた。のち豊名賀薗太夫(とよなかそのたゆう)、鶴賀出雲掾(いずものじょう)、津留賀文弥(つるがぶんや)としばしば改名しているが、27年（文政10）以後の消息は不明である。
