1892‐1985 German philosopher. Born in Wiesbaden. Studied medicine, zoology, and philosophy, and received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Erlangen in 1916. He worked with M. Scheler and Driesch at the University of Cologne (1920-33), then fled to the Netherlands when the Nazis took power, and taught at the University of Groningen until 1942. After World War II, he served as professor of philosophy at the University of Groningen and professor of sociology at the University of Göttingen. Inspired by Uexküll's environmental world theory, Dilthey's philosophy of life, and Husserl's phenomenology, during the 1920s, when various attempts at human cognition were being made, he wrote The Unity of Sensations (1923) and The Stages of the Organic and Man (1928), and together with Scheler, he laid the foundations of philosophical anthropology.
