Japanese: 鞘細菌 - さやさいきん（英語表記）sheathed bacteria

Also read as "shosaikin." Bacteria whose bacterial cells are chained together and enclosed in a sheath-shaped sheath containing oxides of iron and manganese. Also called sheath bacteria. The representative species is Sphaerotilus natans Kützing, which occurs in wastewater from paper or livestock factories, and is also called sewage bacteria or sewage iron bacteria. In most cases, they occur as fuzzy gray-brown clumps on the banks or bottoms of slow-moving streams where wastewater has flowed into rivers and become somewhat diluted. They also frequently occur in activated sludge, forming thread-like clumps that reduce the settling ability of the activated sludge.

〈しょうさいきん〉とも読む。鉄やマンガンの酸化物を含む鞘状の菌鞘の中に細菌細胞が連鎖して包まれている細菌。菌鞘細菌ともいう。Sphaerotilus natans Kützingが代表種で，製紙あるいは畜産工場から流れ出る廃水中に発生するもので，汚水細菌または汚水の鉄細菌ともよばれる。多くは廃水が河川に流入して幾分うすまったゆるい流れの岸や底に，もやもやした灰褐色の集塊として発生し，また活性汚泥によく発生し，糸状の集塊を生じて活性汚泥の沈降性を悪くする。
