This biennial plant of the Gentianaceae family is widely distributed in the temperate zones of Asia and Europe. It grows naturally in sunny mountainous areas. The stem is erect, has four ridges, and reaches a height of 10-60 cm. The leaves are opposite, oblong, 2-6 cm long, and stalkless. In August and September, short flower stalks grow from the leaf axils and produce numerous pale yellow-green flowers. The calyx is green and divided into four pieces, and the lobes are linear. The corolla is deeply divided into four lobes, 6-10 mm long, with 3-7 mm spurs at the base of the lobes. After flowering, a lanceolate capsule measuring just under 1 cm long is produced. The Japanese name comes from the four long spurs that open out on all four sides, which resemble anchors.
