In margin trading, when a securities company is short of funds or stocks, it raises them from a securities finance company. A "securities finance company" is a company that specializes in lending funds and stocks for margin trading, and examples of this include Japan Securities Finance and Osaka Securities Finance. Stocks that are the subject of margin trading, in other words stocks handled by securities finance companies, are called "lending stocks" and are generally stocks that can be sold on margin. In addition, the loan balance (unbought) and stock lending balance (unsold) of securities finance companies for lending stocks are published daily, and are important data for observing short-term supply and demand trends for stocks. Large securities companies with deep resources lend their own funds.

信用取引において証券会社が、資金や株が不足している時に証券金融会社からそれらを調達する取引。「証券金融会社」は信用取引における資金や株を融資することを専門的に行なう会社のことで、「日本証券金融」や「大阪証券金融」などがそれにあたる。貸借取引の対象になる銘柄、つまり、証券金融会社で取り扱っている銘柄を貸借銘柄と言い、一般的に信用売りが可能な銘柄。また、貸借銘柄の証券金融会社の融資残高（買い残）と貸株残高（売り残）は毎日公表されて、株の短期的な需給動向を見るうえで重要なデータとなっている。資力のある大規模な証券会社は自己資金を貸す。
