A port city on the northwest coast of Crete, Greece. Grapes, oranges, and olives are collected, distributed, and processed here. Its ancient name is believed to be Kydonia, and it prospered under Venetian rule in the Middle Ages. It was the central city of Crete until 1971. Population: 53,000 (2001).
