Italian architect and theorist. Born in Bologna. He started out as a painter, but moved to Rome in 1515 to study architecture under Peruzzi. In 1527, he went to Venice with his teacher after the Sack of Rome, an invasion of the Papal States by the Holy Roman Emperor. His major work, "De Architectura", consists of seven books, the publication of which began with the fourth book in 1537, continued after he went to France in 1541 at the invitation of Francis I (reigned 1515-1547), and continued until the seventh book was published in 1575, after his death in Fontainebleau. This book was reprinted and translated into various languages, and became popular throughout Europe because it was a very practical guidebook centered on illustrations. One of the few architectural works that still exists is the house at Ancy-le-Franc in Burgundy.
