Born: 1705. Turin Died October 19, 1770. Turin. Italian architect. After studying in Rome, he returned to Turin in 1733 and was active mainly in Piedmont. Based on geometry, he invented a centralized plan with wavy shapes on the exterior, such as circles, octagons, and ellipses, and developed a unique Baroque style. He designed 27 churches, as well as many chapels, hospitals, and palaces. He is also known as an architectural theorist, having edited G. Guarini's Architettura civile (1737) and written two architectural manuals himself (60, 66). His main works include the Pilgrim's Chapel in Barinotto, the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Bra (42), the Basilica of Santa Croce in Vilanova di Mondovi, and the Basilica of Santa Maria di Piazza in Turin (51-54).
