[Died] c.1963. French painter. Real name Gaston Duchamp. Older brother of sculptor R. Duchamp-Billon and painter M. Duchamp. He moved to Paris in 1894 and made a living by drawing caricatures and posters, while helping to found the Salon d'Automne in 1903. From then until around 1930, he devoted himself to printmaking, producing color prints of paintings by Picasso and Matisse, but returned to the art world and established his own unique style, unifying bright colors and strict composition. His major works include "Between Toulouse and Albi" (1941).

Villon, François

Born: 1431. Paris
French poet since 1463. His real name was François de Montcorbier or des Loges. He was one of the greatest French lyric poets. Much about his life is unclear, especially after 1463. He studied law in Paris until 1456, but from a young age he joined a group of thieves and ruffians, and committed theft and even murder, living a life of debauchery. He was a wanderer, a fugitive, and was imprisoned many times. During this time he also participated in the poetry competitions of Charles d'Orléans. His main works are Lais (1456, called the Petite Testament) and Testament (61, called the Grand Testament).
