A ritual implement unique to Zen temples, it is hung in the dining hall or storehouse and struck to gather the monks. It is made of wood in the shape of a large carp or shachi, with a hollowed-out abdomen, hung horizontally and struck with a wooden mallet. It is also called gyohou or hou, and in ancient times was called mokugyoku. It is said that its fish shape is meant to warn monks not to become sleepy, as fish are awake day and night.
