Miacidae

Japanese: Miacidae
Miacidae

[Origin of cats]
Modern cats (Felinae) originally descended from forest-dwelling ancestors. The Miacidae appeared in the middle Paleocene 50 million years ago and flourished until the early Oligocene 35 million years ago. The Nimravinae branched off from the Miacidae in the late Eocene 40 million years ago, and flourished through the Oligocene and Miocene until the early Pliocene 5 million years ago. The direct ancestor of the Felinae is the Nimravinae, which flourished until the early Pliocene 5 million years ago through the Oligocene and Miocene. Most Nimravinae had five digits on their hind feet (four in the Felinae), long jaws, many teeth, usually 36 (28-30 in the Felinae), and faces very similar to those of modern civets.
