An organization established by the government under the Ministry of Public Works in Paris under the Second Republic to provide relief to the growing number of unemployed people. The Provisional Government established by the February Revolution of 1848 faced a strong demonstration by workers demanding the "right to work" on February 25th, and issued a decree guaranteeing work to all citizens. In response, a decree was issued the following day establishing the Atelier Nationau. However, this did not address the demand for the fundamental right of "the right to work," and it merely allowed unemployed members to work on civil engineering projects such as the expansion of the Champ de Mars and road construction.
