A city facing Tsukumi Bay in the eastern part of Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. It has an abundant limestone vein, and in 1916 the Nippō Main Line was opened. In 1919 a cement factory was established and large-scale mining began. The city center developed as a cement industrial city with the development of Tsukumi Port, and cement is imported and exported. Mandarin orange cultivation is popular in the surrounding area, and in recent years, flowers such as baby's breath have also been cultivated. Coastal fishing for horse mackerel and mackerel, and inshore tuna fishing are also thriving. The Tsukumi Bay area is a beautiful ria coast and is part of the Nippō Coast Quasi-National Park.
