Sanagouchi [Village] - Sanagouchi

Japanese: 佐那河内[村] - さなごうち

A village in Meito County, eastern Tokushima Prefecture. Population 3,245 (1995). Adjacent to Tokushima City. Located in the upper reaches of the Sonose River, most of the village area is forested. Small basins and river terraces have been formed along the Sonose River and its tributaries, producing high-quality rice that was once presented to feudal lords. The climate is warm, and mandarin orange fields spread across the mountain slopes. Mandarin oranges began growing in the early Meiji period when seedlings were transplanted from Sakamoto, Katsuura Town, which borders the southern border of Mount Tsuetate, to Kamisaga. In recent years, however, there has been an active movement away from mandarin orange-centered agriculture toward side-businesses, and the cultivation of sudachi and extra-early mandarin oranges using heated greenhouses has increased, and the village is changing to a diversified management that also includes strawberries and flowers.

徳島県東部，名東（みようどう）郡の村。人口3245(1995)。徳島市に隣接する。園瀬川上流域を占め，村域の多くは山林である。園瀬川とその支流沿いに小盆地や河岸段丘が形成され，かつて藩主への献上米となった良質米を産する。気候は温暖で，山地斜面にはミカン畑がひろがる。ミカンは明治初期，杖立山をへだてて南接する勝浦町坂本から上嵯峨に苗木を移植したのがはじまりだが，近年はミカン中心の農業から兼業化への動きが活発となり，ハウス加温によるスダチ，超早生ミカンの栽培などが増加し，イチゴ，花卉などをもとり入れた複合的経営に変わりつつある。
