It is said to have evolved from a word meaning "a pile of wood chips" to mean "a carpenter's or woodworking workshop." It generally refers to the workplace of an artist, such as a painter, sculptor, or craftsman, and is synonymous with a studio, art room, workshop, or studio. As an art historical term, it often refers to a master's (or master's) workshop where apprentices train, or a workshop where artisans, apprentices, or assistants work together under the guidance and supervision of a master. In 19th century France, it was also used to mean an "atelier libre" (free studio), an unsupervised place to practice nude drawing. However, this also eventually changed to a painting school named after the painter who was the teacher.
