...This work, with its ruthless observations and caricatures, caused a reaction from the audience when it was first performed, but it contains the basic characteristics of Irish theater that followed. In the 1910s, realistic peasant dramas by Esmé Stuart Lennox Robinson (1886-1958) and others became mainstream, and in the 1920s, Sean O'Casey breathed new life into Irish theater with his tragicomedies of slum workers set against the backdrop of the anti-British and civil war era in his plays The Sniper's Shadow (premiered in 1923), Juneau and the Peacock (premiered in 1924), and The Plough and the Stars (premiered in 1926). Yeats continued to write symbolic legendary and allegorical plays incorporating the techniques of Japanese Noh, such as At the Hawk's Well (premiered in 1916), even after his middle period. He also published excellent collections of poetry, such as The Tower (1928) and The Spiral Staircase (1933), based on his experiences during the civil war and his theatrical activities, which won him worldwide fame, but at the core of his poetry are always Celtic myths and legends. *Some of the terminology referenced in "Robinson, ESL" is listed below.
