Roman Emperor. Reigned 364-375. A Pannonia-born soldier, he was supported by the military after the death of Emperor Jovianus. He ruled the west, with his brother Valens as co-emperor. He established his court mainly in Trier, and fought against the Germanic tribes of the upper Rhine to rebuild the defenses of the northern frontier. He employed Theodosius (father of Theodosius I) to repel the invasion of Britain by Scots, Picts, and Saxons, and the Moorish uprising in Africa. In 375, he went to Illyricum, where the Quadi had invaded, and died of a stroke in November while meeting with an emissary from the Quadi.

ローマ皇帝。在位364‐375年。パンノニア出身の軍人で，ヨウィアヌス帝の死後軍隊により帝位に擁立された。弟ウァレンスを共治帝とし，自身は西方を統治。主としてトリエルに宮廷を置き，ライン上流のゲルマン諸族と戦って北方辺境の防衛を再建。スコット，ピクト，サクソン諸族のブリタニア侵入やアフリカでのムーア人蜂起は，テオドシウス(テオドシウス1世の父)を起用して撃退した。375年クアディ族の侵入を受けたイリュリクムへ赴き，11月クアディ族の使者と会見中，卒中で死去。
