321‐375 Roman Emperor. Reigned 364-375. A Pannonia-born soldier, he was supported by the military after the death of Emperor Jovianus. He ruled the west, with his brother Valens as co-emperor. He established his court mainly in Trier, and fought against the Germanic tribes of the upper Rhine to rebuild the defenses of the northern frontier. He employed Theodosius (father of Theodosius I) to repel the invasion of Britain by Scots, Picts, and Saxons, and the Moorish uprising in Africa. In 375, he went to Illyricum, where the Quadi had invaded, and died of a stroke in November while meeting with an emissary from the Quadi.
