This is the label name for paperbacks published by Iwanami Shoten. It was the first paperback series in Japan, launched in 1938 as a series of books that pursued "global culture for modern people," modeled on the British publishers Pelican Books and Penguin Books. The first publication included 20 titles, including Christie's Thirty Years in Mukden (translated by Yanaihara Tadao), "Man'yoshu Masterpieces" (Saito Mokichi), and "The Mathematics of Household Finances" (Ogura Kinnosuke).
