Year of birth: Unknown. A kettle maker in the mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Gorozaemon, his given name was Nobutada. Founder of the Edo Onishi family. Gorozaemon, the second head of the Onishi family of Kyoto (son of Jyosei). During the Kan'ei era (1624-1644), he accompanied his father to Edo, following Furuta Oribe, while Jobayashi stayed in Edo and established the Edo Onishi family. In the "Bukekan" (Buketō records) from the Hoei era (1704-11) to the Horeki era (1751-1764), he appears as "Yariyacho Gorozaemon" as a kettle maker and was a kettle maker for the shogunate. He is said to have made kettles with unusual shapes, such as the Igeta kettles and Karage kettles, which are in the possession of the Tokyo National Museum. In addition to kettles, he made seven bronze lanterns in front of the mausoleum of the sixth shogun Bunshoin (Tokugawa Ienobu) at Zojoji Temple in 1712, and a temple bell at Sengakuji Temple in Shiba with the date of 1719. <References> Katori Hidemasa, "Shinsen Cha-no-yu Kettle Catalog" and "Edo Caster Meifu"

江戸中期の釜師。通称は五郎左衛門,名は延貞。江戸大西家の祖。京都大西家の2代目五郎左衛門村長(浄清の子。寛永年中(1624~44),古田織部に従い父と共に江戸に下向し,定林は江戸に留まり,江戸大西家を興した。宝永(1704~11)から宝暦(1751~64)の間の『武鑑』には御釜師として「鑓屋町五郎左衛門」とみえ,幕府御用釜師であった。東京国立博物館蔵の井桁釜,からげ釜など変わった形の釜を作ったという。釜以外では正徳2(1712)年の増上寺6代将軍文昭院(徳川家宣)霊廟前の銅灯籠7基,芝泉岳寺の享保4(1719)年銘梵鐘などがある。<参考文献>香取秀真『新撰茶之湯釜図録』,同『江戸鋳師名譜』
