Ad-lib

Japanese: アドリブ
Ad-lib
A term used in music and performing arts. It is an abbreviation of the Latin ad libitum (as one wishes, freely). In jazz, it is used to mean the same thing as improvise, when a performer improvises a performance based on the chord progression of the original piece. In theater, it refers to improvising lines and gestures that are not in the script.
