Kitami [city] - Kitami

Japanese: 北見[市] - きたみ
Kitami [city] - Kitami
A city in northeastern Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. The Tokoro River flows into the Sea of Okhotsk, and the area borders Lake Saroma. The city covers the Kitami Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas in the middle reaches of the river. The Sekihoku Main Line and the Tokachi-Okhotsk Expressway pass through the city. The area began as a settlement by the Tondenhei soldiers, and the bottom of the basin became a paddy field, with large fields on the terraces and gentle slopes. The city produces rice, onions, potatoes, and miscellaneous grains, and in the city, agricultural processing such as flour milling, alcohol, dairy products, and sugar refining, as well as wood industries such as pulpwood and plywood, are thriving. The area was once a major producer of mint, accounting for 70% of the world market, but after World War II, it was pressured by the entry of imported synthetic mint into the market and switched to being a major onion producer. The Kitami Mint Memorial Museum is located in part of the former mint factory. In March 2006, the towns of Tokoro, Rubeshibe, and Tanno were incorporated into Tokoro County. The area is 1,427.41 km2 . The population is 125,689 (2010).
